Broadway Comes to Columbus

The best of Broadway is coming to the River Center for the Performing Arts this October! The 2015 original revival of Fiddler on the Roof will play on October 23rd and October 24th, starting at 7:30 pm.

The classic musical tells the story of a poor Jewish milkman named Tevye, and the relationship between himself, his three grown-up daughters, and the tribulations of Russian Jewish life in the early 20th century.

The family-friendly story is based on the stories of Tevye and his five daughters written by Sholem Aleichem, a Yiddish playwright from the late nineteenth century.

However, the musical focuses on Tevye’s relationship with his three oldest daughters: Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava. Tevye struggles to maintain his beloved traditions in the face of the changing world, especially when his three daughters are the ones defying tradition.

The production coming to the River Center is the Tony nominated production directed by one of Broadway’s brightest directors, Bartlett Sher.

An eight time Tony nominee, Sher's previous works include directing the Tony-nominated production of To Kill a Mockingbird (2019). and winning a Tony award for best direction of the musical revival of South Pacific (2008), courtesy of Broadway World.

Joe Dziemianowicz of the New York Daily News characterizes Sher’s direction as putting “...his stamp on one of the great Broadway musicals”.

This new production also features all new choreography. The original production was choreographed by legendary choreographer Jerome Robbins, but this new production replaces Robbin’s version with new choreography by Israeli choreographer Hofesh Schechter.

The New York Times described the choreography as having “the unmistakable stamp of Robbins’s genius”.

The touring production has been touring the nation since the Broadway production closed on December 31st, 2016. Before the company arrives in Columbus, the previous stop is Jackson, Mississippi, and the next stop is Wilmington, North Carolina.

This exciting production will be playing in the Bill Heard Theatre, the largest theatre in the River Center. A pre-show dinner is available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased in person or online before October 23rd, and ticket prices vary by seating level.
